DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 1st Workshop on Codes and Standards Development
and Innovation for Fusion Energy Sector (CS-DIFE)\n\nThe United Kingdom A
tomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Group is pleased to host the 1st CS-DIFE W
orkshop on Thursday\, 19 November 2026 at Culham Campus in Abingdon\, Ox
fordshire.\nThe importance of codes and standards has been highlighted in
the UK Fusion Energy Strategy\, international standards initiatives\, and
the IAEA Technical Meeting on Experience in Codes and Standards for Fusion
Technology. Collectively\, these activities recognise that the successful
commercialisation of fusion energy will require a robust and enabling fra
mework of internationally recognised engineering practices\, qualification
methodologies\, and standards.\nThis workshop represents an important ste
p towards that goal. By bringing together experts from industry\, academia
 \, standards organisations\, regulators\, and fusion programmes\, the even
t aims to strengthen collaboration and accelerate the development of fusio
n standards framework and solutions needed to support the deployment of fu
sion power plants in the UK and globally.\nWorkshop goals\nThis workshop w
ill bring together industry and academia to introduce the fusion codes and
standards programme\, identify key challenges and opportunities\, and str
engthen collaboration across the sector. The outcomes will inform engageme
nt with the British Standards Institution (BSI) and support a coordinated
national approach to developing UK-led fusion standards through BSI and IS
O.\nThe morning session will provide an overview of the need for fusion-sp
ecific standards\, the current national and international landscape\, and
key engineering and technology challenges. Afternoon breakout sessions wil
l explore UKAEA’s proposed approach\, identify priority actions\, and he
lp shape a collaborative roadmap for future standards development and impl
ementation.\nWorkshop format and sessions\nThe workshop will begin with 5
invited presentations from subject matter experts who will provide the nec
essary background on the current fusion codes and standards landscape\, UK
AEA's role in fusion codes and standards development\, and challenges of c
odes and standards within the STEP programme. The afternoon will consist o
f 5 breakout sessions covering the following themes:\n\nVacuum vessel and
 in-vessel components\nTritium breeding systems and fuel cycle\nMagnets\nRe
mote handling systems\nBalance of plant\, including control and instrument
ation (C&I)\, electrical systems\, fire safety\, and supporting plant syst
ems\n\nFurther details of the morning and afternoon sessions can be found
in the Agenda section on the left-hand side panel of this page.\nWho shoul
d attend\nThis workshop is open to professionals from industry\, academia\
 , government organisations\, regulatory bodies\, standards organisations\,
and fusion programmes who are interested in advancing fusion technology a
nd its industrial deployment. \nWe also welcome researchers\, engineers\,
policymakers\, regulators\, and other stakeholders whose expertise and per
spectives can help shape future codes\, standards and engineering assuranc
e frameworks for fusion energy.\nWhy codes and standards for fusion energy
matter  \nCodes and standards are essential to the safe\, reliable and
efficient development of fusion technologies. As fusion moves towards comm
ercial deployment\, dedicated standards will be needed to address fusion-s
pecific conditions\, support technology qualification and regulatory engag
ement\, strengthen supply chains and reduce deployment risks.\nBy building
on existing experience while embracing advanced materials\, manufacturing
and digital technologies\, fusion offers an opportunity to develop modern
\, internationally harmonised standards. Collaboration across industry\, a
cademia\, regulators\, standards bodies and fusion programmes will be key
to supporting confidence and accelerating commercial deployment.\nTicket a
nd key dates\nThis event will be held exclusively in-person.\nRegistration
is now open!  \nYou can book this ticket until 6 November 2026. Places a
re limited due to room capacity\, so early booking is recommended. If your
place is confirmed\, you must read the site emergency slides before arriv
ing\, these can be found here: Site emergency information.\n\n \n\nhttps:
