The Computing Division Technical Meetings are a platform for

  • presenting Pinboard papers under review for journal or conference publication,
  • inviting speakers who are current or prospective UKAEA collaborators at external organisations,
  • presenting work done in PhD projects funded by or co-supervised by UKAEA,
  • presenting work done during summer placements or other secondments to UKAEA.

If you would like to invite a speaker on a topic that would be of interest to one or more Units within the Computing Division, but is not currently collaborating on a UKAEA project, please consider nominating them for a Computing Division Cross-Disciplinary Seminar.

These meetings are normally recorded. Recordings of past meetings can be found here:

Abstract

This talk is concerned with state-of-the-art solver techniques for the highly anisotropic heat conduction encountered in magnetic confinement fusion plasmas. Being able to accurately run high fidelity simulations of magnetic confinement fusion devices is critical to advance our physical understanding of fusion, and interface with great experimental progress being made. The high levels of anisotropy pose two major challenges: (i) discretisation accuracy and (ii) efficient implicit linear solvers.

The talk will present several accurate structure-preserving discretization schemes that in particular avoid the need to conform the computational mesh to the magnetic field surfaces.  Progress in solving the resulting linear systems will be presented and a new preconditioning scheme, which combines domain discretization and algebraic multigrid, will be demonstrated.  New results, showing that the novel preconditioner significantly outperforms classical algebraic multigrid on a selection of fusion-relevant examples, will be presented.

This work is the second CD Technical Talk given as part of the Fusion Futures International Collaboration Robust and scalable solvers for PDEs with highly varying anisotropic coefficients in magnetic confinement fusion involving UKAEA, STFC-SCD and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
