Description
  • Summary: An introductory workshop to help you get started with version control using Git and UKAEA’s GitLab service. Version control is the lab notebook of the digital world: it’s what professionals use to keep track of what they’ve done and to collaborate with other people. Every large software development project relies on it, and most programmers use it for their small jobs as well.

  • Objectives:

    • Learn the core commands for the command line utility, Git
    • Track the changes of files and explore their history with Git using a repository
    • Learn what to do when there are conflicting changes to files when collaborating
    • Find out where to host repositories and how to interact with the remote servers
  • Audience: Anyone in a science, engineering or technical role with little or no prior experience of using Git, GitLab, or version control systems. This is a course for beginners and novices. People who have used other version control systems may also find it useful, but please look at the lesson content in the link below to judge for yourself.

  • Prerequisites: Some previous experience with the Unix shell, while not strictly mandatory, is extremely helpful when taking this course. Please consider signing up to The Unix Shell (10231) as well.
