High-fidelity simulation of entire fusion facilities requires a coalescence of multi-scale and multi-physics models, numerical methods, and high-performance computing. Open-source software can offer benefits over some closed-source or export-controlled alternatives in this domain, such as: ease of distribution and collaboration; extensibility of code; transparency of implementation; reduced cost; suitability for massively-parallel deployment. Despite these benefits, the user-experience can be significantly different from traditional alternatives, and transitioning to new ways of working can be challenging for many new users.
The objective of this school therefore is to provide exposure to engineers and scientists working in fusion applications to a set of relevant open-source software tools and reduce the barrier-to-entry for their adoption in everyday workflows.
