Welcome to the 1st Sustainable (W) Tungsten Innovations for Fusion Technologies (SWIFT) Workshop!
Join us for UKAEA’s 1st SWIFT workshop on 2 December 2025 at Culham Campus.
As highlighted in the recently published 2nd UK Fusion Materials Roadmap, tungsten is a cornerstone material for multiple fusion applications: plasma-facing components; neutron shielding and corrosion barriers. However, tungsten has also been identified as a critical resource that needs significant supply chain development – especially with the predicted increase in usage for fusion energy production.
It is a core activity of UKAEA to establish material supply chains for green, sustainable commercial fusion.
This workshop aims to bring together a wide community across industry and academia to introduce the SWIFT programme; aiming to develop a cradle-to-cradle UK-based tungsten supply chain to deliver and validate advanced fusion components at commercial scale.
Research areas will include:
- Mining, refining and recycling of tungsten for/from existing supply chains as well as fusion
- Microstructural design & manufacture of tungsten and tungsten-based alloys for fusion components
- Operational testing, including (but not limited to): high heat flux testing, irradiation and liquid metal
- Multi-length scale characterisation, including microscopy, mechanics and thermal properties
- Fusion component design and engineering
- Joining and machining
- Component and material qualification
- Remote inspection and maintenance
- Multi-length scale modelling, including tritium transport and microstructural stability
This workshop will introduce the requirements for fusion and present case studies on different component systems to highlight potential research themes. Break-out groups in the afternoon will discuss UKAEA’s proposed approach and provide a chance to help identify and suggest key activities and next steps.
Registration

Who can attend
This workshop is open to professionals from both industry and academia with an interest in fusion technologies, advanced materials, and UK-based supply chain development.
Due to high demand and limited availability, only register if you are confident you can attend. This helps us manage resources and ensure places are used effectively.
Ticket and key dates
This event will be held in an in-person format.
You can book your ticket until 24 November 2025. Places are limited due to the room capacity, so early booking is recommended. If your place is confirmed, you must read the site emergency slides before arriving (please click here).
